Zulu Adigwe, Renowned Nollywood Actor and Star of ‘Basi and Company’, Passes Away

LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigerian film industry mourns the loss of one of its most venerable actors, Zulu Adigwe, who passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, according to a statement from movie producer Stanley Nwoko.

Known for his portrayal of fatherly figures, Adigwe’s passing marks a significant loss for Nollywood, where he was affectionately known as Mazi Udemba.

Stanley Nwoko, confirming the sad news via an Instagram post, expressed his sorrow: “I regret to announce the passing of a veteran actor, late Mr Zulu Adigwe. What caused his death is yet to be reviewed. Rest in peace good actor.”

Tragically, Adigwe and several actors were on their way to a filming location when the incident leading to his death occurred.

The exact circumstances around the incident have not been disclosed, adding a layer of sorrow to the loss felt by his colleagues and fans.

Nwoko’s message has since gone viral, drawing condolences from across the entertainment industry.

Adigwe’s death marks yet another loss for Nollywood, which has seen the demise of six other notable actors in 2024 alone, including Sisi Quadri, Mr. Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor, Andy Best, Jumoke Aderounmu, and Junior Pope.

Adigwe’s acting career, which spanned several decades, began in Europe during his university years in the 1970s.

After initially pursuing medicine at a university in Austria, his passion for the arts led him to switch his studies to Theatre Arts, culminating in a degree from the University of Ibadan.

He made a significant impact in Nollywood after returning to Nigeria in 1999.

Adigwe first gained major recognition in the entertainment industry through his breakthrough role as Mr. B in Ken Saro-Wiwa’s popular situational comedy, ‘Basi and Company’ which was launched in 1987.

His role in ‘Basi and Company’ solidified his reputation and endeared him to audiences across Nigeria.

Adigwe continued to make his mark with a standout performance in the 2019 blockbuster, ‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free,’ a sequel to a movie that had originally catalyzed the Nollywood industry.

According to Adigwe’s biography published by TRILLNG, Adigwe was born and raised in Enugu, in the southeastern part of Nigeria.

He received his education in Austria, completing his primary, secondary, and tertiary education abroad before returning to his home country to pursue his acting career.

Adigwe’s career was distinguished by a range of performances that often showcased his versatility and depth in understanding complex characters, making him a beloved figure among audiences and peers alike.

His legacy in Nollywood will undoubtedly be remembered for generations to come as a guiding light for aspiring actors.
