Yoruba Activist Sunday Igboho Set to Return to Nigeria, Lawyer Reveals

Must read

COTONOU, Benin – Yoruba nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, commonly known as Sunday Igboho, is preparing to return to Nigeria after fleeing the country in 2021, according to his lawyer, Mr. Pelumi Olajengbesi.

Igboho left Nigeria following a raid on his Ibadan residence by the Department of State Services, DSS.

The operation, confirmed by DSS spokesman Dr. Peter Afunanya, resulted in two deaths, the arrest of 13 individuals, and allegations that Igboho had stockpiled weapons in his home.

The activist was subsequently arrested in neighbouring Cotonou, Benin Republic, as he attempted to travel to Germany, but has since been released.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Friday, July , 2023, Olajengbesi stated, “Igboho is doing very well and he will soon be in Nigeria in a very ceremonial way. The arrangements are on.”

Olajengbesi also expressed frustration with the legal system’s inability to enforce a judgment delivered in favor of his client, due to the requirement for the Attorney-General’s consent before security agencies can settle judgment debts.

The lawyer called on the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu to reconsider its stance on “freedom fighters” such as Igboho, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and RevolutionNow protester Mr. Omoyele Sowore.

Olajengbesi praised President Tinubu’s leadership and governmental reforms, stating they have “rekindled the hope of average Nigerians that government can serve the common good of the people.”

However, he criticized the Federal Government’s Service Compact With All Nigerians, SERVICOM, claiming the agency had failed to fulfill its purpose and should be scrapped.

On taxation matters, Olajengbesi highlighted issues of double taxation for business owners, calling for a review of such practices.

These statements and developments come as Nigeria navigates various political and social challenges, with the upcoming return of Sunday Igboho likely to attract substantial attention.
