World Cup Kiss: Former Spanish FA Chief Luis Rubiales Convicted of Sexual Assault

Must read

MADRID, Spain — Former Royal Spanish Football Federation, RFEF, president Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of sexually assaulting Women’s World Cup winner Jennifer Hermoso by kissing her on the lips during the medal ceremony following Spain’s victory in 2023.

The Spanish High Court on sentenced Rubiales to pay a fine of $11,270 (€10,800), to be paid in daily installments of $21 over an 18-month period.

However, the court acquitted him of coercion charges and did not impose a prison sentence, despite prosecutors initially seeking a two-and-a-half-year jail term.

Court’s Ruling and Sentencing

The judge ruled that while the kiss was “always reprehensible,” it was a “sporadic act” and did not meet the legal threshold for intimidation or violence, which would have warranted a custodial sentence under Spanish law.

In addition to the fine, Rubiales was ordered to pay $3,130 (€3,000) in compensation to Hermoso for “moral damages” caused by the incident, which was broadcast to thousands of spectators in the stadium and millions watching on television.

The ruling also bars Rubiales from approaching within 200 meters (656 feet) of Hermoso or communicating with her for one year.

Hermoso’s Testimony and Impact on Her Life

Hermoso, 34, testified that the incident overshadowed what should have been one of the happiest moments of her career.

“I knew I was being kissed by my boss, and that should not happen in any social or work environment,” she told the court.

“I think it was a moment that tainted one of the happiest days of my life. Until today, it seems that my life has been on standby; honestly, I have not lived freely.”

Rubiales, who resigned as RFEF president following the controversy, maintained in his defense that Hermoso had consented to the kiss.

He testified on February 11 that he had asked her permission before the act, a claim Hermoso refuted in court.

Broader Impact and Reaction

The case ignited a nationwide debate on misogyny in sports and Spanish society, triggering mass protests and calls for institutional reform within football.

The scandal also led to significant changes within the RFEF, including the dismissal of figures linked to Rubiales’ administration.

The court also acquitted three former RFEF officials, including ex-women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda, who had been accused of coercing Hermoso into saying she had consented to the kiss.

CNN has reached out to Rubiales’ and Hermoso’s legal representatives, FIFA, UEFA, and the RFEF for comment.

With the verdict now delivered, the case remains a defining moment for women’s football and the ongoing fight against gender-based misconduct in sports.
