A woman, Abosede Lawal, had pleaded with an Igando Grade A Customary Court to dissolve her marriage of 20 years with her estranged mechanic husband, Demola Lawal, because he had allegedly gone mad.
Lawal who is a fashion designer told the court President, Rasack Ishola-Adeyeri, that she never knew the man had such issue before she agreed to tie the knot with him, according to Vanguard.
She said she caught a glimpse of her husband’s condition when he began to mutter some unintelligible words during a visit to the hospital where she had her first baby.
Initially, Lawal said she thought it was something she could cope with but had to move out on the long run when it got to the pint where her life was at stake.
She said, “Whenever we go to bed, he always says he would kill me before he can be well, though some times when he regains his sanity, he behaves normal.
“Whenever my husband loses his sanity, he always brings acid, cutlass and knife to the bed room and keeps them beside the bed and says that if he does not kill me, he will not be well.
“After sometime he will stop saying it. He also beats me mercilessly whenever he loses his sanity.”
The woman refuted the claims of being married to another man as basis for her divorce plea, adding that she could no longer put up with him due to his condition which she claimed was hereditary.
The woman who had five children for her ‘mentally deranged husband’ said she continued to have babies for him hoping he would get back to his correct senses with time which is yet to happen.
During the hearing, the court advised the woman to get all her children to live with her after she disclosed that one of them lived with their father while the other four were with her own mother.
The case was adjourned for further mention till Wednesday, February 4, 2015.
