ABUJA, Nigeria – Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, announced on Thursday, August 1, 2024, that security agencies have allegedly identified a senator as a sponsor of the recent anti-government protests.
Minister Wike made the disclosure following an emergency FCT Security Council meeting held in Abuja.
The meeting was convened urgently to assess the first day of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests.
Earlier in the day, Wike had praised the protesters for their peaceful conduct.
“I commend the demonstrators for exercising their rights in a nonviolent manner,” he said.
However, the situation escalated by evening when reports emerged of unrest on the Murtala Muhammed (Kubwa) Expressway.
Protesters reportedly set bonfires, erected blockades, and extorted motorists, disrupting the usual heavy traffic flow on the highway.
The emergency security meeting, summoned by Wike on Thursday evening, aimed to address these developments and strategise on maintaining order.
The minister expressed concern over the turn of events and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents.
“We have credible intelligence indicating that a senator is among those fueling these protests,” Wike stated. “Our security agencies are working diligently to address this issue and hold those responsible accountable.”
The #EndBadGovernance protests have garnered significant attention, drawing participants from various parts of the country.
While the demonstrations began peacefully, the recent violence has raised concerns about potential escalation and the influence of external actors.
Security agencies have been tasked with investigating the allegations and ensuring that peace is restored in the FCT.
Wike also urged protesters to remain peaceful and avoid any actions that could lead to further violence or disruptions.
According to Mr Wike, who is also the immediate past governor of Rivers State, authorities are on high alert as the situation develops, and additional security measures are being considered to prevent further incidents.
