LOS GATOS, USA – Henry Cavill, known for his iconic portrayal of Superman, has announced that the third season of The Witcher will be his last as Geralt of Rivia.
In a surprising turn of events, Liam Hemsworth, star of The Hunger Games, is set to take over the role of the White Wolf from season 4.
Cavill made his departure official in late 2022 through a statement on Instagram.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill wrote. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”
While Cavill did not provide a specific reason for his departure, his previous comments in the Happy Sad Confused podcast on October 27, 2022, hint at possible career decisions.
He stressed the importance of belief in one’s work, and the significance of stopping when realizing something is not the right path.
Additionally, The Witcher fan website Redanian Intelligence reported that Cavill might have been considering leaving the show after season 2 due to creative differences with the producers regarding Geralt’s character development and role.
Cavill expressed his desire for a more book-accurate portrayal of Geralt during the season 2 press tour.
He told Philstar in December 2021, “It’s important for me to have the character be three-dimensional. And it’s tricky to do… it was about me trying to find Geralt’s place within that. All of my asks and requests were along the lines of just being faithful to the source material.”
Speculations also arose regarding Cavill’s possible increased commitment to DC.
However, DC Studios head James Gunn confirmed that Cavill would not be reprising his role as Superman, debunking the speculation.
Despite leaving The Witcher, Cavill’s career continues to flourish with several projects lined up, including Argylle, a potential Warhammer project, and an upcoming Guy Ritchie film.
As for his final season on The Witcher, Cavill remained relatively quiet on the press trail, making appearances only at TUDUM in Brazil and the season’s premiere.
Fans and co-stars gave him a standing ovation during the premiere, celebrating his impactful portrayal of Geralt of Rivia.
The exact reason for Cavill’s departure remains uncertain, and fans will be eager to learn more in the future.
Meanwhile, anticipation builds for Liam Hemsworth’s portrayal of the beloved character in the coming seasons.
