Why Couples Who Have More Sex Live Longer—And Healthier—Lives

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria – Adesida Adewumi, a consultant family physician, has revealed the surprising health benefits of regular sexual activity, claiming that couples who engage in sex more frequently tend to live longer and enjoy better overall health.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, Dr. Adewumi explained that regular sex has far-reaching effects on both physical and mental well-being.

According to him, sexual activity boosts the immune system, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, and promotes better sleep, all contributing to an enhanced lifespan.

Adewumi went on to highlight several health advantages of frequent sexual activity, including a lowered risk of stroke, heart attack, and certain cancers.

He specifically pointed out that men who ejaculate 21 times a month reduce their risk of prostate cancer, and regular sex helps lower the risk of breast cancer in women as well.

“Regular sex reduces the risk of prostate and breast cancers,” he stated.

For individuals struggling with weight, Adewumi explained that sex could act as a calorie-burning activity.

He noted that sexual activity, when performed at least three times a week, mimics the effects of regular exercise.

“It also helps lower high blood sugar levels,” he added, emphasizing its role in improving metabolic health.

The family physician also stressed the positive effects of sex on mental health, explaining that it can alleviate depression and anxiety, as well as improve brain function.

This, in turn, can lead to higher productivity and greater career satisfaction.

“Sexual activity contributes to better mental health by reducing the risk of depression and anxiety,” Adewumi explained.

For pregnant women, Adewumi explained that regular sexual activity during pregnancy can lead to smoother deliveries and quicker post-delivery recovery.

He suggested that couples could enhance their emotional well-being and intimacy by maintaining a healthy sexual relationship, fostering love and reducing stress.

“Couples who have regular sex tend to be happier, more logical, and less irritable,” he said.

“Sexual activity also fosters emotional well-being by increasing intimacy and love between couples.”

In addition to the emotional benefits, Adewumi recommended that women have regular sex a few days before their menstrual cycle begins to reduce cramps, further highlighting the ways in which regular sexual activity can benefit women’s health.

Despite the numerous benefits, Adewumi emphasised the importance of engaging in sexual activity within the context of a committed relationship.

He urged couples to focus on monogamy to protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, herpes, and hepatitis.

“A monogamous relationship significantly reduces the risk of exposure to these harmful infections,” he said.
