‘We Need to Stop Hero-Worshipping’ – Peter Obi Decries Lack of Political Courage

UMUAHIA, Nigeria—Peter Obi, the Labour Party‘s 2023 presidential candidate, criticised the lack of courageous individuals willing to speak truth to power in Nigeria.

Mr Obi made these remarks on Saturday, July 13, 2024, during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Alaigbo Development Foundation.

Addressing attendees in Umuahia, Obi lamented the prevalence of sycophants in the country who only tell leaders what they want to hear.

“What we lack in Nigeria is people who can tell you you are wrong when you are,” Obi stated. “Leaders are bound to listen to the people because the people put them in the office.”

The former governor of Anambra State reflected on his tenure, emphasising his prudent management of public funds and urging current leaders to prioritise the welfare of the populace.

“Leaders must use public money for public purpose. When I was in public office, I used public money for public purpose. I made sure I used the people’s money for them,” he said.

“I did not spend any kobo for personal gain. I didn’t take it, [I didn’t] owe pensions or gratuities. I did not owe any contractors. Now in private life, I can do whatever I like with my money.”

Obi blamed Nigeria’s challenges on the greed and relentless pursuit of wealth among public officeholders, calling for a shift towards people-centred policies and programmes that promote public peace.

He urged Nigerians to stop hero-worshipping leaders and instead hold them accountable.

“Leaders are bound to listen to the people because the people put them in the office,” he emphasised. “We need to speak truth to power and stop hero-worshipping.”
