A 19-year-old woman identified only as Rokhshana was stoned to death for having sex with a man who she was not yet married to.
A viral video of the harrowing ordeal showed a group of men throwing stones at the woman in a dug-out hole in the ground while she cried helplessly until she finally gave up the ghost.
Local official Mohammad Zaman Azimi blamed Taliban militants for the horrifying footage, filmed in the village of Ghalmin on the outskirts of Firoz Koh, the Ghor provincial capital, Daily Star reports.
It was learnt that the Rokhshana’s 23-year-old fiancé, Mohammad Gul, received a less severe punishment for the offence.
In Afghanistan, unmarried women are often confined to their homes to relate with members of their immediate families without having any contact with men outside.
Men and women found guilty of having relationships outside marriage are sentenced to death or publicly flogged in Taliban-controlled areas.
