Multiple award winning retired neurosurgeon, Dr. Ben Carson, on Sunday, May 3, 2015 officially announced his intention to run for the Republican presidency in 2016.
Speaking about his intentions to Ohio’s WKRC, Carson said, “I’m willing to be part of the equation and therefore, I’m announcing my candidacy for President of the United States of America.
“Many people have suggested to me that I should run for president, even though I’m not a politician.
The Detroit-born star carved a niche for himself during his 29 years service at the pediatric neurosurgery unit of Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, where he still lives.
He directed the first surgery to separate conjoined twins connected at the back of the head.
The inspiration behind the 2009 movie, “Gifted Hands,” with actor Cuba Gooding Jr. depicting Carson was actually derived from the widely celebrated neurosurgeon.
He graduated from Yale University with a degree in Psychology and later received his medical degree from the University of Michigan.
Carson went on to teach pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 2008, President George W. Bush awarded Carson the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
