The 2015/2016 English Premier League season has kicked off and there is so much to look forward to. Manchester United have won their first game of the season after beating Tottenham 1-0 at Old Trafford. Tottenham started out strong as they tried to ruffle the feathers of United’s untested centre-back pairing of Daley Blind and Chris Smalling.
It was United who took the lead however in the 22nd minute. Tottenham had lost possession of the ball through Nabil Bentaleb. Ashley young took initiative and floated a cross for Wayne Rooney who was a bit slow on the ball. Kyle Walker rushed on to Rooney in attempt to win the ball but unfortunately for the visitors, he passed it past his own keeper.
In the 26th minute, Jan Vertonghen was yellow carded for a foul on Juan Mata but the resulting freekick taken by the petite Spaniard was a poor one. The two teams went in at half time with the scores still 1-0.
New signing, Bastian Schweinsteger came on for his competitive debut in the 60th minute as he replaced Michael Carrick. The German’s movement was really positive and it appears with time, he can grow to become an integral part of the setup at Old Trafford. He was yellow carded nine minutes after he came on for a cynical foul on Nacer Chadli.
Tottenham did all they could to level the scores as the game drew to a close but late saves from Manchester United’s new goalkeeper, Sergio Romero denied them.
