Keep erase the data as a resort because once you do that, you can’t use Find my iPhone afterwards. Choosing lost mode will lock the device with password and a display message with name and phone number of your choice in case somebody finds your iPhone and is generous enough to return it. You don’t have to worry about location being turned off because once lost mode is active, your phone’s location services will be active as well.
