Nigerian universities have cancelled pre-degree and diploma programmes.
According to reports, the National Universities Commission, NUC, instructed that universities ignore such programmes, leaving them for polytechnics and concentrating efforts in harnessing human capital in the core undergraduate, part-time and postgraduate courses.
Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, executive secretary of the commission, gave this order at meeting held between Monday, October 10 and Wednesday, October 12, 2016, with vice chancellors of universities across the country.
Rasheed also directed that the research directorate of NUC be reinforced to work with those of the universities in order to co-ordinate research activities in universities and ensure that the output is relevant in reference to context.
He also said the NUC would merge old, experienced and young, vibrant academics to ensure a not-only dynamic curricula, but one that is also responsive to national needs, and conforms to global trends.
