Officials of the Oyo State police command have arrested a 20-year-old man, Olajide Ajayi, for slitting his niece’s throat after stealing her school fees to buy clothes for his girlfriend.
Ajayi said to be a student of a College of Education in the state, reportedly deceived his niece, Opeyemi Ajala, also a student of same institution and took her ATM card in the guise that he would withdraw N47,000 to help her pay her fees.
The police revealed that rather than paying the school fees as agreed, Ajayi used the money to buy clothes for his girlfriend.
It was when Ajala demanded for the teller with which the fees was paid that her uncle planned to kill her so as to cover up his tracks as the pressure was so much and he could not afford to pay her back, according to reports.
It was gathered that the suspect sneaked into the victim’s room armed with a knife on the fateful night as she was fast asleep.
He overpowered her and slit her throat, before fleeing the scene, abandoning her to die slowly.
She was however, lucky to have managed to alert her neighbours through the phone and was rushed to the University College of Hospital, Ibadan, before they filed a report of the incident to the police.
In a confessional statement, Ajayi said, “I collected the money, but I spent it. When the pressure from her was too much, and there was no way I could get the money to pay her back, I decided to kill her. One night, I went to her house with a sharp knife to kill her.
I got to her house at about 8 pm; when I entered the room, I locked the door and pinned her head down on the bed. I did not allow her to shout. Then, I brought out the knife and slit her throat. When blood started gushing out and she was unconscious, I thought she was dead and I escaped.”
Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Katsina, said the victim’s survival of the ordeal was a miracle.
