WASHINGTON, DC, USA – Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his name from consideration for attorney general in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.
His decision, announced on Thursday, November 21, 2024, comes amid intensifying scrutiny over allegations of sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, and other ethics violations detailed in a congressional report.
Gaetz announced his withdrawal on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the growing controversy surrounding his potential nomination was becoming an “unfair distraction” to the incoming administration’s work.
He reiterated his loyalty to Trump, saying, “I will forever be honoured that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice, and I’m certain he will save America.”
I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance…

Trump Responds to Gaetz’s Decision
President-elect Trump acknowledged Gaetz’s withdrawal on Truth Social, expressing gratitude for his efforts.
“He was doing very well, but at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the administration, for which he has much respect,” Trump said, adding that Gaetz has a “wonderful future” and will accomplish “great things.”
Trump’s choice of Gaetz as the nation’s top law enforcement officer faced backlash from lawmakers across party lines, particularly as the ethics committee debated the release of its report into years-long allegations against him.
The Controversy
The allegations against Gaetz include claims of sexual misconduct, bribery, drug use, and improper relationships.
Among the accusations is testimony from a woman who alleged that she witnessed Gaetz having sexual relations with a minor at a 2017 party.
Another witness claimed to have been paid for sexual encounters with Gaetz.
A federal investigation into Gaetz for sex trafficking ended without charges, but the House Ethics Committee continued to probe the allegations.
The committee’s findings have remained sealed, with Republican leadership arguing that Gaetz’s resignation from Congress last week nullifies the need to release the report.
Gaetz’s Future
Gaetz, who was re-elected to his Florida House seat in the recent election, has not detailed his next steps.
However, speculation is rife about potential roles in the Trump administration or even a move to the Senate.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis could appoint Gaetz to a Senate vacancy if one arises, notably if Senator Marco Rubio assumes his new role as Trump’s Secretary of State.
Returning to Congress, however, might complicate matters for Gaetz, as the Ethics Committee report could be made public if he resumes legislative duties.
A Divided Senate Awaits
President-elect Donald Trump has named Pam Bondi, a veteran prosecutor and former Florida attorney general, his attorney general nominee.
Bondi will face a rigorous confirmation process in the Senate, where even some Republicans have voiced concerns about recent nominations.
As South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds noted, “This provides the president an opportunity to look at other very qualified individuals who can help to revamp the Justice Department.”
