WASHINGTON DC, USA – Former President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney after she publicly denounced him during a Kamala Harris campaign event on Thursday, October 3, 2024.
Cheney, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump, took the stage at a rally for Vice President Harris, calling on Republicans to reject Trump’s influence over the party.
In a fiery post on Truth Social following Cheney’s remarks, Trump lashed out at the former Wyoming representative, mocking her electoral defeat and accusing her of misconduct during her time on the House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot.
“Liz Cheney lost her Congressional Seat by the largest margin in the history of Congress for a sitting Representative,” Trump fumed in his post.
“The people of Wyoming are really smart! She is a low IQ War Hawk that, as a member of the J6 Unselect Committee of Political Hacks and Thugs, ILLEGALLY DESTROYED & DELETED all documents, information, and evidence.”
Cheney’s Criticism of Trump
Trump’s outburst was triggered by Cheney’s speech at the Harris event, where she made pointed remarks about the former president’s actions and leadership.
Cheney, who has positioned herself as a staunch critic of Trump within the GOP, poked fun at Trump’s well-known penchant for spray tanning before turning to more serious criticisms.
“I was a Republican even before Donald Trump started spray-tanning,” Cheney joked. She then sharply condemned Trump’s role in the January 6 attack on the Capitol, saying, “Donald Trump was willing to sacrifice our Capitol, to allow law enforcement officers to be beaten and brutalized in his name, and to violate the law and the Constitution in order to seize power for himself.”
Cheney, a former member of the House January 6 committee, has not wavered in her stance against Trump since her electoral defeat in 2022.
At Thursday’s event, she urged voters of all political affiliations to reject Trump’s candidacy in 2024.
“I don’t care if you are a Democrat or a Republican or an independent. That is depravity, and we must never become numb to it,” Cheney said.
Trump’s Retaliation
Trump, who has often targeted Cheney in his speeches and social media posts, escalated his attacks in response to her latest remarks.
In his Truth Social post, Trump not only slammed Cheney but also took aim at her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, who has similarly endorsed Harris.
Accusing Dick Cheney of leading the U.S. into costly wars in the Middle East, Trump derided both father and daughter as “two fools” and “a pathetic couple” who are “suffering gravely from Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
Trump added, “The Republican party no longer wants them,” claiming the Cheneys are irrelevant within today’s GOP.
GOP Endorsements for Harris
Cheney’s support for Harris comes amid a broader effort by the Democratic campaign to appeal to disillusioned Republican voters, especially those uncomfortable with Trump’s rhetoric and influence over the party.
In recent weeks, the Harris campaign has launched ads in battleground states featuring longtime GOP supporters who are backing her candidacy.
Additionally, Maria Comella, a former aide to Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, has joined Harris’ campaign to lead the effort in attracting moderate Republicans and independents.
With less than a month to go before the November election, Cheney’s outspoken rejection of Trump highlights the deep divisions within the Republican Party as it grapples with the former president’s enduring influence.
As Cheney and others continue to endorse Harris, the Democratic campaign is banking on their support to sway swing voters in key states.
