ABJIDAN, Cote D’Ivoire – In a bittersweet turn of events, Guinea’s first victory at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cote D’Ivoire has been marred by tragedy.
Six Guinean supporters tragically lost their lives while celebrating their country’s recent win, according to the Guinean Football Federation (Feguifoot).
The victory, a nail-biting 1-0 win against The Gambia on Friday, January 19, 2024, night, had propelled coach Kaba Diawara’s side to the edge of the tournament’s knockout rounds.
The triumph sparked widespread jubilation across Guinea, with fans pouring into the streets to celebrate the momentous occasion.
However, the festivities took a tragic turn. Feguifoot, in a statement, confirmed the deaths of the six fans.
Feguifoot’s media manager, Amadou Makadji, while expressing grief over the incident, urged fans to exercise caution during celebrations.
“What is important is that our fans and the public celebrate in a very measured fashion. They have to be very careful not to put themselves in danger, because football aims to bring joy and not leave families bereaved,” Makadji told BBC.
Makadji emphasised the deep passion for football in Guinea, describing it as unparalleled.
The incident has cast a shadow over the country’s achievement in the tournament, reminding fans worldwide of the need for safety in times of celebration.
