ABUJA, Nigeria — A powerful explosion caused by an auto accident on Karu Bridge in Abuja has reportedly left an unspecified number of people dead, according to eyewitness accounts and videos shared on social media.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, with witnesses attributing the explosion to a high-impact collision involving a vehicle suspected to be a truck transporting fuel or a highly flammable substance.
In a video shared by a user identified as General Jhamuha, several cars were seen engulfed in flames as bystanders attempted to rescue victims from the burning wreckage.
The footage showed the intensity of the fire, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky and onlookers standing at a distance, unable to approach due to the heat and danger.
General Jhamuha was heard pleading for urgent assistance, urging people to contact emergency services.
“People are dying, people are burning! Anyone close to Road Safety should call them. They should call the fire service. People are dying, people are burning at Karu Bridge!” he exclaimed.
He added, “People should help! Everyone is burning! God, look at human beings burning, and nobody can get close.”
The cause of the accident and the exact number of casualties remain unclear as emergency responders work to contain the situation and provide assistance to victims.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and fire service personnel were reportedly called to the scene to extinguish the fire and manage the aftermath.
