Members and students of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, Ugbowo community has been thrown into shock and mourning as Isaac Eshiozheme Adams, a final year student of computer engineering decided to end his life.
This reporter gathered that Adams had been struggling with mental health issues, which got to a head when he was in his 200 level of studies at the university. He was said to have recovered from that episode, and was on drugs to suppress his mental health ailment.
Described as quiet personality who always carried a smile on his face, Adams was also heading for a first class degree in the Computer Engineering Department of UNIBEN as his academic Grade Points acquired already had meant he was headed to a smashing academic degree.
But on Thursday, March 8, 2018, Adams suddenly hanged himself.
A student told Journalists: “He locked himself in his room and when a friend knocked and knocked his door without any answer, he suspected something was wrong. Other students joined and forced the door open, only to see that Adams had hanged himself.”
A moving message from one friend of Adams wished he would get the peace he was searching for, even as he considered the suicide as selfish.
Another student said: “He actually suffered from a mental impediment in 200/300l. So I don’t think this is absolutely normal. The effect of the schizophrenia usually comes during rainy season… So he told me back then. He had been on drugs far before that time (mental health drugs).”
Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality. Although schizophrenia is not as common as other mental disorders, the symptoms can be very disabling.
