Power Play: Lobbying Fever Hits Tinubu’s Camp as APC Stakeholders Jostle for Appointments

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria — As President-elect Bola Tinubu is poised to be sworn in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, on Monday, May 29, 2023, anticipation builds over his first appointments in line with the nation’s political tradition.

Three key roles are expected to be filled immediately: the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Chief of Staff, and presidential spokesperson.

These are crucial positions that keep the wheels of the government in motion, pending other appointments that require the National Assembly’s approval.

Following Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 presidential election, there has been rampant speculation and intense lobbying for positions, including ministerial appointments, in his administration.

Several close associates of the President-elect have been rumored for these roles. However, inside sources close to Tinubu revealed this weekend that nothing is definitive regarding the imminent appointments.

Despite the speculation, Tinubu has kept his allies, close associates, and even lobbyists in the dark regarding his picks for the cabinet.

This veil of secrecy has reportedly created a heightened sense of anticipation among those aiming to join the new administration.

Names speculated to take up significant roles in Tinubu’s cabinet include the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola; Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State; and Mr. James Faleke, a federal lawmaker from Lagos.

There are reports that el-Rufai, along with outgoing governors Aminu Masari of Katsina State and Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, are contenders for the SGF office.

Former Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State is also rumoured to be in the race for a ministerial appointment, with indications that he is favored for the External Affairs portfolio.

Despite these reports, multiple sources claim that Gbajabiamila is facing considerable opposition for the potential role of Chief of Staff.

As for the presidential spokesperson position, no names have been confirmed, though high-profile professionals around Tinubu, such as Mr Bayo Onanuga and Mr Dele Alake, are deemed suitable candidates.

As the inauguration of Tinubu approaches, the political atmosphere is fraught with anticipation, speculation, and the promise of a fresh political landscape.
