ABUJA, Nigeria — Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun was sworn in as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) on Monday, September 30, 2024 marking a historic moment as she becomes the second female CJN in the country’s history.
The swearing-in ceremony, presided over by President Bola Tinubu, took place at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja, on Monday, September 30, 2024, following her confirmation by the Senate.
The event was witnessed by key judicial figures, including four former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Court of Appeal, and heads of various judiciary divisions. In his remarks, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the independence and sanctity of the judiciary.
“The judiciary is an important pillar constituting the tripod that holds our constitutional democracy,” the President said, emphasizing the judiciary’s role as the last hope of the common man and a vital safeguard for democracy.
President Tinubu pledged to improve the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers, further urging Justice Kekere-Ekun to uphold ethical leadership, fearlessness, and honesty throughout her tenure.
He also commended her rise as a significant achievement for women in Nigeria and an inspiration to young girls in a traditionally male-dominated field.
The ceremony was attended by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, senior judicial officers, and members of the Federal Executive Council.
