ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria praised his decision to remove fuel subsidies and the changes to foreign exchange regime policies, insisting that they receive global commendations and are yielding positive results for the nation’s economy.

Speaking at a Gala/Award Night on Saturday, July 29, 2023, Tinubu was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

The event was organized by the office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, to recognize and honor exceptional civil servants and to mark this year’s Civil Service Week.

Tinubu expressed gratitude to civil servants for their significant contributions to the economic development of Nigeria and vowed to provide further support to the civil service sector.

He also emphasized the government’s commitment to cushion the impact of these policies on the general populace.

“We shall without delay cushion the pains being experienced by our people as a result of these measures through some well-targeted interventions aimed at giving adequate relief and succor to a great number of our long-suffering citizens,” said Tinubu, as communicated by Senator Akume.

The removal of fuel subsidy has been a contentious issue in Nigeria, leading to mixed reactions from various sectors of society.

While supporters argue that it will help to stabilize the economy and reduce corruption, opponents fear that it may result in higher fuel prices and further hardship for the average citizen.

The government’s changes to the foreign exchange regime are also part of broader economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the Nigerian currency and encouraging foreign investment.

Tinubu’s remarks at the gala underscore the government’s belief in the positive impact of these policies, both at home and in the international community.

His assurance of targeted interventions to alleviate the burdens on citizens reflects an acknowledgment of the potential challenges many Nigerians face due to these economic changes.

The event also served as a platform to highlight the essential role of civil servants in implementing government policies and their vital contributions to national development.

The award ceremony was attended by various dignitaries and high-ranking civil servants, with awards presented to those who have shown outstanding dedication and service to the Nigerian state.
