LAGOS, Nigeria – Olisa Agbakoba, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has taken issue with former Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa’s recent statement implying that his wife, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, may have provided undue assistance to politicians during her tenure as President of the Court of Appeal.
Adamu Bulkachuwa, who represented the Bauchi North Senatorial District in the 9th Senate, made the controversial disclosure during the Senate Valedictory Session on Saturday.
Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa served as the President of the Appeal Court from April 2014 to March 2020.
In response to Bulkachuwa’s remarks, Agbakoba, through his Media Assistant Niyi Odunmorayo, issued a statement on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 demanding that President Bola Tinubu intervene to preserve the integrity of the judiciary.
The former NBA president also called for an immediate investigation into the former senator’s comments.
In the statement, Agbakoba noted: “Senator Bulkachuwa’s statement at the Valedictory of the 9th Senate is a monumental disgrace for our institutions. This man deserves to be taken up immediately by the authorities. It is a blight on my confidence in our systems.”
Agbakoba further referenced a case he represented in the past. “I represented Usman Tuggar in a dispute over elections between him and Senator Bulkachuwa for the Bauchi North senatorial seat. We lost in three courts. Senator Bulkachuwa seems to suggest why.”
According to the senior lawyer, for President Tinubu to succeed, he must take bold steps to cleanse the system.
Agbakoba concluded with a clear call to action: “The President ought to act now!”
