President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, met with Mudashiru Obasa, the reinstated Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and other lawmakers to discuss the state of affairs in the legislative house.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, comes amid lingering tensions following a leadership crisis that rocked the Assembly earlier this year.
Obasa, accompanied by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda and other members of the House, arrived at the Villa around 2 p.m. and left at approximately 4 p.m.
Details of the discussions remain undisclosed, as Obasa declined to speak with journalists after the meeting.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since January, when Obasa was removed as Speaker over allegations of financial misappropriation and high-handedness.
Meranda was subsequently elected to replace him. However, Obasa contested his removal, describing it as illegitimate.
Following interventions by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu, Meranda announced her resignation during a plenary session, paving the way for Obasa’s reinstatement as Speaker. Meranda was then sworn in as Deputy Speaker.
The meeting between Tinubu and the Lagos lawmakers is believed to have focused on resolving the lingering crisis and ensuring stability within the Assembly.
However, neither the Presidency nor the lawmakers have issued an official statement regarding the discussions.
The crisis in the Lagos Assembly has raised concerns about governance and legislative efficiency in Nigeria’s most populous state.
Political analysts have called for transparency and accountability in resolving the dispute to prevent further disruptions.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are closely watching how the leadership of the APC and the Presidency will navigate the challenges within the Lagos State House of Assembly.
