ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian presidency has called for an immediate cessation of campaign activities related to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
This follows the appearance of campaign materials, including billboards, in several cities promoting Tinubu’s candidacy for a second term.
In a statement issued on Sunday, April 13, 2025, Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesperson, condemned the premature campaign as a violation of electoral law, which prohibits early political campaigns.
Onanuga described the development as an act that “breaches the laws of the land,” urging those responsible for the unauthorized materials to cease their activities immediately.
“An increasing number of billboards campaigning for Tinubu’s re-election have been sighted in some cities,” Onanuga said, acknowledging the “enthusiasm” of the administration’s loyal supporters.
However, he emphasised that political campaigning for the 2027 elections is not allowed until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially sets the timetable for the elections.
“As law-abiding leaders, President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima do not support any action that undermines our institutions and the electoral process,” the statement read.
Onanuga clarified that political campaigns are only legal once INEC announces the official start of the election cycle.
He urged all individuals and groups funding these premature campaigns to cease immediately, stressing that such actions could damage the integrity of the electoral process.
“The ongoing task of nation-building remains the top priority for President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima,” Onanuga stated.
“This commitment is reflected in their focus on economic revitalisation, human capital development, infrastructural renewal, social investment, and national security.”
The statement also indicated that President Tinubu would inform the public of his intentions regarding the 2027 election once INEC officially begins the election process.
