ABUJA, Nigeria – President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu met with the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday, May 5, 2023, to discuss the zoning of leadership positions for the 10th National Assembly.
The meeting, held at the Defence House in Abuja, included APC National Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu, Deputy National Chairman (North) Senator Abubakar Kyari, Deputy National Chairman (South) Emma Eneukwu, and National Secretary Senator Iyiola Omisore.
A reliable anonymous source revealed that during the 90-minute meeting, Tinubu expressed his preference for Akpabio as the 10th Senate President, with Senator Jibrin Barau to serve as deputy. The meeting also reached a consensus on Abbas Tajudeen becoming the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“It is true Asiwaju met with Adamu, Omisore, Kyari, and Eneukwu today (Friday). They have agreed that Akpabio will be the next Senate President while Jibrin will be his deputy. TJ (Abbas Tajudeen) will be the next Speaker,” the source stated.
The North Central region is expected to be compensated with the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
On Wednesday, following an NWC meeting, Adamu hinted that the ruling party and the president-elect would reach a consensus on zoning the leadership positions in the next Assembly.
He said, “we want to take [Tinubu] along. He travelled after the election and he came back only last week and we have to carry him along.”
Adamu emphasised the importance of reaching a consensus and working together, stating, “we have to find a way, persuasively, to reach some level of consensus. That’s what we are working on. It is not a one-day affair.”
