Ticking Clock for APC: Delta Guber Election Tribunal Sets Deadline for Omo-Agege

Must read

ASABA, Nigeria – The Delta State Governorship Petition Tribunal has set a deadline for Ovie Omo-Agege, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to regularise the documents he seeks to present in his case.

If Omo-Agege fails to comply by July 11, 2023, the tribunal threatened to invoke pertinent laws against him.

This ultimatum comes amid the resumed hearing of Omo-Agege’s petition challenging the election of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

The three-man tribunal, headed by Justice C.H. Ahuchaogu, adjourned the hearing until July 11, 2023, for a definitive hearing.

Justice Ahuchaogu warned, “If the petitioners are unable to conclude the regularisation of the documents to be tendered, the tribunal would invoke the relevant sections of the law against them.”

At a previous juncture in the hearing, the tribunal had briefly adjourned the session for 40 minutes to enable the petitioners to regularise their documents.

Earlier, A.K. Osawota, the counsel to Omo-Agege, who formerly served as the deputy president of the Senate, attempted to tender additional documents before the tribunal but to no avail.

Osawota, who was represented by Bello Abu, requested a court adjournment due to complications in the document regularisation process.

As the July 11 deadline approaches, all eyes are on Omo-Agege and his legal team as they scramble to complete the document regularisation process, with the credibility of their petition hanging in the balance.

Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege, 59, is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who held the position of Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate from 2019 to 2023. On June 11, 2019, he ascended to the Deputy Presidency of the 9th National Assembly after defeating Ike Ekweremadu by a margin of 31 votes.

He represented Delta Central Senatorial District from 2015 to 2023, following his initial election to the Senate in 2015. His electoral victory marked Omo-Agege as the first senator from Delta State and his rise in the red chamber of the National Assembly marked the first from the Delta Central senatorial district to serve as Deputy Senate President.
