A three-year-old boy had accidentally shot his pregnant mum and father with a loaded gun which he found while ransacking his mum’s handbag for an iPod.
The bullet went through the buttocks of his father, Justin Reynold and struck the arms of his eight-month pregnant mother, Gabrielle Burkhart at about 2p.m on Saturday, January 31, 2015.
The boy’s two-year-old sister who was also in the same motel room at America’s Best Value Inn in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the incident happened was unharmed, a Mirror UK report said.
Pregnant Burkhart who sustained severe injuries is responding positively to treatment whereas Reynolds, had since been released from hospital.
Reynolds said, “All of a sudden we heard a gun go off.
“The next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding. Then I sat down and realized I was shot too. I was more worried about my girlfriend than myself and anything else that was going on.
“And my son because I didn’t know if he had shot himself or not. He was shocked and crying.”
The police are still contemplating on whether to charge the parents of the toddler with negligence.
Nonetheless, the state Children, Youth and Families Department had taken the children into custody for about two days.
