DENVER, USA — A Colorado man is under investigation for a possible bias-motivated attack on a television news reporter after allegedly following and assaulting him while demanding to know his citizenship.
The suspect, Patrick Thomas Egan, 39, reportedly invoked former President Donald Trump during the incident, saying, “This is Trump’s America now.”
According to police, Egan followed KKCO/KJCT reporter Ja’Ronn Alex for approximately 40 miles from Delta to Grand Junction on December 18, 2023.
Alex, who is Pacific Islander, told officers he believed the pursuit and attack were racially motivated.
At a stoplight in Grand Junction, Egan, who was driving a taxi, allegedly pulled up alongside Alex and shouted, “Are you even a U.S. citizen? This is Trump’s America now! I’m a Marine and I took an oath to protect this country from people like you!”
When Alex returned to his news station in Grand Junction, Egan reportedly chased him as he ran toward the station’s door.
According to an arrest affidavit, Egan tackled Alex, put him in a headlock, and began to strangle him.
Witnesses and coworkers intervened, reporting that Alex appeared to be struggling to breathe during the assault.
The attack was partially captured on surveillance footage.
Legal Proceedings
Egan was arrested on charges of second-degree assault, harassment, and bias-motivated crimes.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to learn whether formal charges will be filed.
Ruth Swift, Egan’s lawyer, did not respond to requests for comment.
Reactions
KKCO/KJCT vice president and general manager Stacey Stewart stated that the station would not comment further on the attack beyond what had been reported.
Alex, a Detroit native and KKCO/KJCT reporter, was driving a marked news vehicle at the time of the incident.
The attack has prompted widespread condemnation on social media, with many calling for stricter measures to address racially motivated violence.
Broader Implications
The case has sparked renewed discussion about bias-motivated crimes and the role of media professionals who face risks while reporting.
Advocates are urging authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and hold perpetrators accountable to protect press freedom and public safety.
Egan remains in custody as the investigation continues.
