KANO, Nigeria — Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State is set to officially transfer the reins of power to his successor, Abba Yusuf, later on Sunday, May 28, 2023, marking an end to his tenure and the commencement of a new chapter in the state’s leadership.

The development was confirmed in a statement on Sunday, May 28, 2023, by the outgoing Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Muhammad Garba.

The ceremonial handover will take place at 9 pm local time at the Government House in Kano on May 28, 2023.

Garba explained that the State Government Transition Committee had already informed the incoming governor’s transition committee about the event.

“The two committees met within the week during which a handing-over document was presented to the governor-elect committee and also worked out a harmonised agenda for the handing-over ceremony,” he elaborated.

In a swift transition, Ganduje is slated to leave for Abuja shortly after the handover ceremony. As the leader of the Kano delegation, he will attend the inauguration of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday, May 29, 2023.

This move is also designed to beat the closure deadline for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, which will be shut down in preparation for the inauguration.

In the statement, Garba called on the citizens of Kano State to continue praying for peace and development, setting a hopeful tone as the state readies for the change of administration.

As this pivotal moment in Kano’s political history unfolds, the eyes of the nation are on the state, keenly observing the transition and its potential ramifications for the region’s future.
