JERUSALEM, Israel — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that the country’s military operation to eliminate Hamas fighters in Gaza is approaching its final stages.
Netanyahu emphasised Israel’s determination to achieve its objectives, including the return of hostages, the dismantling of Hamas’ military and governing capabilities, and ensuring Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel.
The Israeli military offensive in Gaza was launched in response to the Hamas-led October 7 attacks on southern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,200 people and the abduction of over 250 others.
Since the onset of the offensive, Israeli attacks in Gaza have led to the deaths of at least 37,718 Palestinians and injured another 86,377, according to Gaza health officials.
Netanyahu’s announcement comes at a time when the International Criminal Court (ICC) is considering issuing arrest warrants for him and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza.
The ICC has temporarily delayed its decision following a request from the UK to provide legal arguments contesting the court’s jurisdiction over the matter.
The UK contends that under the Oslo Accords, Palestinian authorities cannot transfer jurisdiction to the ICC to prosecute Israelis.
The ICC has granted the UK until July 12 to submit its arguments, pausing the decision-making process on the arrest warrants.
Despite the legal and international challenges, Netanyahu remains resolute in his commitment to the military campaign in Gaza.
“We are advancing to the end of the stage of eliminating the Hamas terrorist army; we will continue striking its remnants,” Netanyahu stated.
He highlighted the significant gains made by the Israeli military in Rafah, the southern Gaza city regarded as Hamas’ last stronghold.
The ongoing conflict has drawn significant international attention, with numerous calls for a ceasefire and a peaceful resolution.
