Tragedy struck at the IMG Secondary School, Oke Ado, Ibadan, Oyo State, after a student slumped and died while a teacher was flogging him for lateness.
The development stirred a serious outrage among the students who staged a protest over the death of their colleague on Wednesday, October 28, 2015.
The deceased yet-to-be identified student could no longer bear the severe punishment he received from the teacher for arriving late for school on the fateful day.
According to reports, lessons had commenced for the day when the late student arrived and was being questioned by the teacher when the principal was walking past the class.
The principal sought to know why the teacher was having a discussion with the student and reportedly directed the teacher to flog the student who died during the process.
Narrating the incident to newsmen, an eye witnesses who pleaded anonymity said: “Trouble started when the student arrived school after classes had commenced for the day, he reportedly told the teacher he came late due to illness.
“At that point, the principal, who was passing by asked the teacher the cause of the discussion.
“The principal ordered the teacher to flog the student for coming late and he slumped in the process.
“They tried to resuscitate him but it was too late.”
Several property and other valuables were destroyed by the student’s outrage until the police arrived and restored normalcy in the school.
The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the incident said they have commenced investigation into the matter.
