ABUJA, Nigeria — The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has announced that it is nearing full recovery of the national grid following a partial disturbance that occurred on Monday, October 14, 2024, evening.
The grid disruption, which took place at approximately 6:48 p.m., prompted an immediate response to restore power across the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, confirmed that recovery efforts began swiftly with the Azura Power Station initiating the black start process.
The recovery has since progressed significantly, with 90% of TCN’s substations nationwide now back online.
“By 10:24 a.m. on Tuesday, grid recovery had reached advanced stages, in spite of encountering a brief challenge that caused a minor setback,” Mbah explained.
She noted that despite the setback, TCN pressed on with its recovery efforts and made substantial progress in restoring power to major distribution centres, including the Abuja axis.
The statement also highlighted that the partial disturbance did not impact the Ibom Gas generating station, which continued to supply power to areas in the South-South region, including Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and Itu 132 kilovolt transmission substations.
This helped maintain power stability in that part of the country during the disturbance.
Power Restoration Efforts
While full recovery is imminent, the TCN emphasized that it is working diligently to ensure that all affected areas are reconnected to the grid as quickly as possible.
Power supply has already been reinstated in critical load centres, reducing the extent of disruption for most consumers.
As the TCN continues its efforts to stabilize the grid, the company reiterated its commitment to improving grid reliability and minimizing the frequency of such disturbances.
This latest partial grid failure comes amid broader efforts by the Nigerian government and TCN to enhance the country’s power infrastructure and ensure more consistent electricity supply nationwide.
With bulk power availability now restored to most regions, TCN assured Nigerians that full grid recovery would be achieved shortly, and the focus remains on preventing future incidents that could disrupt power supply across the nation.
