A sad incident occurred when two siblings waiting for their school bus were crushed to death by a fuel tanker on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 in Ikirun, Osun State.
According to eyewitnesses, it took a couple of hours before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) could get a truck to lift the detached tanker’s head on top of the pupil.
However a resident of the town, known as Sola while narrating the incident said the accident was as a result of the driver’s carelessness and high speed.
Meanwhile the unit commander of the FRSC in Ikirun, Mr. Gabriel Esan, when contacted, confirmed the accident via a telephone interview with a correspondent.
He said “Two pupils were crushed by a tanker today. The accident happened on Ikirun-Okuku Road. We had to hire a truck to lift the tanker before we could remove the two pupils.
“One of them died on the spot, while the other one was badly injured but was still breathing when he was taken to a hospital.”
Mr Esan called on motorists to ensure that their vehicles are properly checked and deem fit before putting them on the road.
He also advised drivers against violating traffic rules, saying doing so would ensure the safety of other people plying the road and would also maintain decorum on the roads.
