A dying grandfather was given another chance to a good and healthy life when a tumour, twice the size of his head was removed by a medical charity group that offer free treatments in some of the poorest nations on earth.
The man identified as Sambany had walked for 3days from his home in Madagascan to reach the port of Toamasina after hearing about the group known as Mercy Ships from a close friend.
The group operates an ocean liner that settles in various ports, offering free, state-of-the-art health care to those in need.
Although the team is made up of highly professional doctors, surgeons, few had worked on tumour the size of Sambany’s.
After a successful 12-hour surgery, Sambany revealed that he had first noticed something was wrong while he was in his 20s.
According to him, he first developed a swelling in his left cheek that began to grow eventually becoming almost twice the size of his head.
The tumour began to place unbearable pressure and pain on his body, with his heart struggling to cope with the weight of the burden.
Speaking with Mail Online, Sambany said, “I’m just happy.
“I know without surgery I will die.
“I know I might die in surgery, but I already feel dead inside from the way I’m treated.
“I choose to have surgery.”
Sambany was handed a mirror by the surgeon to see himself without the tumour for the first time in a long while.
However, he was directed by the doctor to remain on the boat for a couple of months while he recovers.
