The All Progressives Congress,APC, South-East zone, yesterday, called on governors in the zone to support the programmes and policies of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration irrespective of party affiliations.
The party said the governors should emulate David Umahi, Ebonyi State Governor, for his support to President Muhammadu Buhari’s laudable programme to construct a progressive Nigeria and his total objection to ‘needless opposition’.
According to reports in the media, Umahi who lost his mother recently, told a team of PDP delegation in the state that paid him a condolence visit at his home in Uburu in Ohozara local government area on Saturday, that since Ebonyi State has a lot of challenges, it would make no sense for the State to embark on “senseless” opposition.
Reacting in a statement, spokesman of APC Leadership Caucus of the South-East zone, Mr Osita Okechukwu, commended Governor Umahi for his disposition to the Buhari led APC Federal Government, and urged other opposition Governors, to emulate him, for good governance and prosperity.
He said, “we equally commend Governor Umahi for his pronouncement that his support to Mr President does not anyway mean that he is leaving his party – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); for us it is a welcome development, because our dear country needs a strong opposition and constructive criticism to reinforce our fledgling democracy. We do not want a one party, rather we cherish two dominant political parties in a multi-party system. This is the zenith of liberal democracy which stabilizes, unites a country and provides the electorate with alternatives during the elections.”
Okechukwu hailed Umahi for exhibiting statesmanship, spirit of patriotism, far sightedness and concern for the wellbeing of Nigerians and Ndigbo in particular under President Buhari led APC Federal Government.
He added that, “it is our considered view that Ndigbo and all hard working and enterprising Nigerians stand to benefit immensely from the transparent Buhari administration than the patronage system of yore.
“Accordingly, we in the South-East All Progressives Congress particularly enjoin other opposition party Governors in the South-East to take a cue from their brother Governor Umahi, who has shown that the interest of the people in Ebonyi State and Ndigbo is more paramount to him than political leanings. United Ndigbo will share the prosperity of President Buhari’s good tidings.
