LOS ANGELES, USA — Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, both Grammy-winning artists, announced their endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris‘ 2024 presidential campaign, emphasising the importance of reproductive rights, climate action, and safeguarding democracy.
The endorsement was made in a video shared on National Voter Registration Day, encouraging their millions of followers, particularly young voters, to take part in the upcoming election.
“We can’t let extremists control our lives, our freedoms, and our future,” Finneas, 27, said in the video, which was widely circulated across social media platforms. Eilish, 22, added, “Vote like your life depends on it, because it does.”
Eilish and Finneas endorsed Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, citing their commitment to protecting reproductive freedom, addressing climate change, and promoting democratic values.
The endorsement comes amid heightened political tensions surrounding Project 2025, a controversial policy proposal from conservative groups, including the Heritage Foundation, that Harris and her campaign have described as “dangerous.”
Former President Donald Trump, who is running against Harris as the Republican nominee, distanced himself from Project 2025 during a debate last week, stating, “I haven’t read it… It makes no difference.”
Harris, however, alleged that Trump intends to implement the plan if re-elected, escalating the policy as a focal point of her campaign.
Following Eilish’s endorsement, the Harris campaign released an ad featuring the singer’s song When the Party’s Over, focusing on the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The ad featured a woman recounting her experience with sexual abuse and emphasizing the importance of reproductive rights, a central theme of the Harris-Walz platform.
Eilish, who had previously endorsed President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, has been vocal about her political views, particularly regarding climate change and systemic inequality.
“We need leaders who will solve problems like climate change and COVID, not deny them,” Eilish said in 2020. Her latest endorsement mirrors her earlier support for progressive candidates.
The video comes on the heels of pop star Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Harris following the recent vice-presidential debate with Trump.
Swift praised Harris as a “steady-handed” and “gifted leader” and expressed her belief that Harris would champion the rights and causes most important to her.
Trump’s response to Swift’s endorsement was brief and direct, posting an all-caps message on Truth Social: “I hate Taylor Swift.”
The public spat sparked a wave of support for Swift from fellow celebrities and fans, many of whom posted messages with the tagline, “I love Taylor Swift.”
Meanwhile, Eilish’s endorsement further solidifies Harris’ support among young voters, a key demographic in her re-election bid.
As the 2024 election heats up, endorsements from influential figures like Eilish and Swift signal the growing engagement of younger generations in shaping the country’s future.
