NLC Calls for Government Action: ‘Nigerians in Sudan Should Not Die,’ Warns Buhari

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria — Amid the escalating tensions and conflict in Sudan, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) urged the Federal Government to secure the safety of Nigerian citizens in the troubled African nation on Saturday, April 22, 2023.

NLC President Joe Ajaero, in a statement titled “Nigerians in Sudan Should Not Die”, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Sudan, emphasizing the government’s responsibility to protect its citizens.

“We have watched with increasing alarm and despair the unfolding tragedy in Sudan as a result of the ongoing war in that country,” Ajaero stated. “Nigerians must not be allowed to die in Sudan because of negligence. No effort should be spared in ensuring their safety and, ultimately, evacuation to Nigeria if the war persists and escalates into a full blown war.”

Ajaero insisted it is the duty of the Nigerian government to safeguard its citizens, wherever they may be. His message was a clear call to action for federal officials: “It remains the duty of the government, and we urge the federal government to make this happen.”

The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, also addressed the pressing issue, expressing concerns that the recent burning of aircraft in Sudan’s airport might obstruct the immediate evacuation of stranded Nigerians.

The government’s response to these urgent calls for action will be closely watched, as Nigerians at home and abroad anxiously await a resolution to the crisis. The lives of countless Nigerians in Sudan hang in the balance.
