ABUJA, Nigeria – Labour Party’s Peter Obi has expressed his concern over approximately 4,000 Nigerians, including many students, trapped in war-torn Sudan.
As fighting escalates in Khartoum and other regions, Nigerian students in Sudan are urging the federal government to evacuate them to safety.
The government’s handling of the situation has drawn criticism, with many questioning its approach.
In response to the crisis, Peter Obi took to his official Twitter account on Sunday, April 23, 2023, to express his disappointment with the federal government’s lack of action.
Obi called on the Nigerian government to expedite efforts to rescue and evacuate its citizens in Sudan.
He tweeted, “I’m sad and concerned by the reports that Nigerians trapped in Sudan have not been evacuated. While we understand the extreme challenges in Sudan, we deeply implore the Federal Government of Nigeria to expedite all efforts to rescue about 4,000 Nigerians, mostly students.”

He emphasised the government’s responsibility to protect Nigerians both at home and abroad, urging officials to address the situation with greater proactivity and commitment.
“Since it is the statutory responsibility of FGN to protect Nigerians at home in Nigeria and abroad, we must attend to such issues with more deserving proactiveness and commitment as the life of every Nigerian is sacred and important,” he posted.
The ongoing crisis in Sudan was sparked by conflicts between rival generals on April 15, 2023, leaving thousands of Nigerians caught in the crossfire and awaiting assistance from their government.
