Spirit And Life Devotional: The Most Difficult Thing Jesus Ever Asked Someone To Do

Must read

Spirit and Life Devotional is a daily publication by Pastor Chinaemerem Ibezim, senior pastor of Able Ministers Chapel, a church based in Calabar, Cross River State.

[pull_quote_center]”They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do.” Galatians 2:10 [/pull_quote_center]

A rich young ruler met Jesus and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” Jesus replied, “Keep the commandments.” The young man said to Jesus, “I have kept all the commandments from my youth. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

That must be the most difficult thing Jesus ever asked anyone to do: asking a rich man still in his youth to sell all his property and give all the proceeds to the poor? Wow! I’m sure it first sounded as a joke. But Jesus wasn’t joking! That was too much for the young rich ruler; he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Thankfully, there’s no such instruction for us in the Bible; many of our churches would have been empty! But we must always remember the poor and give to them. God will bless us as we do. Amen.
