“When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.” – 1 Corinthians 13:11 NLT
As children, it was okay for us to play in the rain and to play with dirt. I remember seeing my nephew cooking sand not too long ago. I enjoyed watching him, but you can imagine how shocked I will be to see an adult doing that. Why? Because a time comes in our lives when we put away childish things.
Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in Christ. I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren’t ready, for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world?” 1 Corinthians 3:1-3
If you are still playing with sin, thinking carnally and walking in the flesh, you are still a child in the things of God. And you know what the Bible says about children? It says that they are not different from servants, and that they are not different from unbelievers. You can’t have been born again for a while and still be struggling with certain things! No, you should have conquered them by now! You shouldn’t be comfortable living a certain kind of life and talking anyhow, knowing fully well that God is not pleased with it. It’s time to put away childish things! Grow up!
