GENEVA, Switzerland — FIFA has imposed a 90-day suspension on Luis Rubiales, the President of the Spanish Football Association, RFEF, for his inappropriate conduct at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia.
The suspension is effective immediately and stems from an incident involving Spanish national team player Jenni Hermoso.
The controversy unfolded after Rubiales kissed Hermoso on the lips during Spain’s post-match celebrations, claiming it was “consensual.” However, Hermoso stated she “did not enjoy it,” later specifying that the kiss was “never consensual.”
The RFEF responded with a statement on Friday, August 25, 2023, questioning Hermoso’s account and insisting Rubiales “has not lied.” FIFA has since opened disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales.
FIFA’s Statement
The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Jorge Ivan Palacio of Colombia, announced the decision, citing Article 51 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, FDC.
He stated that Rubiales is “provisionally suspended from all football-related activities at national and international levels,” pending further investigation.
As part of the suspension, FIFA has also prohibited Rubiales and other RFEF members from contacting Hermoso or anyone in her close environment.
Outpouring of Support for Hermoso
The incident has elicited widespread support for Hermoso. Numerous players internationally have voiced their backing for the Spanish star, while some have vowed not to play for the national team until Rubiales is removed from his position.
Implications for Spanish Football
Rubiales’s refusal to resign and the subsequent FIFA suspension bring new uncertainty to Spanish football, particularly when preparations for upcoming international events are in full swing.
The RFEF will have to navigate this complex legal and ethical terrain swiftly, as their credibility and international standing are at stake.
This incident has also reignited the ongoing conversation about the treatment of women in sports, providing another poignant reminder of the issues that players can face.
FIFA’s disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales are still ongoing, and further developments are expected.
Given the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings, all individuals involved are considered innocent until proven guilty.
