AWKA, Nigeria – Anambra’s Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Agụnechemba Security Outfit, popularly known as Operation Udo Ga-Achi, has announced the arrest of 25 individuals suspected of engaging in homosexual activities in Anambra State as part of its broader crackdown on crime.
In videos circulating on social media on Friday, March 14, 2025, the General Commander of the security outfit is seen interrogating the suspects.
However, he did not disclose the exact location and time of the arrests.
According to reports, the individuals were allegedly apprehended at an undisclosed hotel where they were said to be partying and socialising over the past week.
The detainees, hailing from different southeastern states and beyond, confessed to the allegations in the footage.
Legal and Human Rights Concerns
The arrest has sparked reactions from various quarters, with legal experts and human rights advocates raising concerns over due process and potential human rights violations.
Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act (SSMPA) of 2014 criminalises same-sex relationships and prescribes up to 14 years imprisonment for those convicted of engaging in such activities.
However, rights groups have often criticised arrests carried out by non-state security outfits, questioning the legality and fairness of their operations.
Lack of Official Police Statement
As of now, the Anambra State Police Command has not issued any statement regarding the arrest, nor is it clear if the suspects have been handed over to law enforcement authorities for formal prosecution.
The situation is developing, and further updates are expected as investigations continue.
