There was palpable tension in Enugu State as combined team of soldiers and policemen on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 dispersed supporters of former Governor and candidate of the People for Democratic Change (PDC) in the Enugu-East senatorial district election, Chimaroke Nnamani, who had turned up in their numbers to protest the result of the election which saw Gilbert Nnaji of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerge victorious.
Nnamani, who had led a similar protest on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, attempted to repeat the act in another round of protests tagged “Occupy Enugu”, leading his supporters to the headquarters of Enugu North council near the popular Ogbete market.
The crowd was said to be dispersed by heavily armed soldiers and policemen, who chased the crowd up to Obiagu round about, employing the use of teargas cannisters, resulting in a mild stampede, as traders scampered for safety.
Reacting to the development, Nnaji said there was no way Nnamadi could claim victory, challenging the former governor to produce evidence of his claims.
He said: “If Nnamani is claiming that he won the election, let him come and prove how he did it. You people can check the ballot boxes and see if there is any evidence of falsification. All he is doing is to try and misinform the public.
