SOKOTO, Nigeria – Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has signed six new laws, including the controversial amended Sokoto Local Government and Chieftaincy Law, which removes the Sultan of Sokoto’s authority to appoint district and village heads within the state.
During the signing ceremony on Thursday, July 18, 2024, Governor Aliyu emphasised that the new laws aim to enhance good governance rather than target any individual or group.
“Laws are constantly evolving to meet the needs of the times and the interests of the governed. Nigeria has seen numerous constitutional amendments aimed at fostering peace, stability, and socio-political development,” Aliyu stated.
Addressing the controversy surrounding the amendments, Governor Aliyu noted that previous administrations had also made similar changes to promote peace and development.
He suggested that the negative reactions stemmed from political motives and misunderstandings about the amendments’ purpose.
“I urge our Ulama to remain impartial and not let themselves be used by politicians for their own gain,” he cautioned.
Governor Aliyu reiterated his administration’s commitment to the rule of law and pledged to be responsive to the people’s needs, ensuring that all enacted or amended laws align with constitutional provisions.
He expressed his appreciation to the State House of Assembly members for their dedication and patriotism in handling the legislative amendments.
Additionally, he emphasized his intention to collaborate closely with traditional rulers and the Sultanate Council for the betterment of Sokoto State and Nigeria.
Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Kabiru Ibrahim (APC-Kware), commended the legislative process, highlighting its inclusivity and stakeholder involvement.
The amended bills address various sectors, including the Arabic and Islamic Board, Rural Roads and Land Tenancy, the Zakkat and Endowment Agency, the Prohibition of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities, and the Local Government Consolidated Law of 2009.
Governor Aliyu concluded by expressing gratitude to the people of Sokoto for their continued support and urged them to contribute to achieving the administration’s development goals.
