Sokoto Government Digs Into Land Deals, Asset Sales During Tambuwal’s Tenure

SOKOTO, Nigeria – Sokoto state government has established a Commission of Inquiry to investigate all land allocations and the sales or auctions of government assets during the administration of former Governor Aminu Tambuwal.

The 5-member commission is chaired by Justice M.A. Pindiga (retired), with Barrister Nasiru Muhammed Binji serving as Secretary.

The other members include Chief Jacob E. Ochidi, SAN; Alhaji Usman Abubakar; and Barrister Lema Sambo Wali.

According to a statement on Saturday, July 8, 2023, signed by the Press Secretary to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the committee will verify the state government’s bank account and the amount obtained from the sales and auctions of these assets.

Additionally, the committee is tasked to review the allocation of lands throughout the state, as well as government-owned properties that were sold or auctioned.

The commission has been allotted two months from its first meeting to deliver its report, a move seen as part of Governor Aliyu’s commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.

The impact of this inquiry on the political climate of Sokoto State remains to be seen.
