IBADAN, Nigeria – In a tragic turn of events, the University of Ibadan community is reeling from the murder of Professor Opeyemi Ajewole.
According to local sources, suspected assassins are believed to be responsible for his death.
Reports state that Professor Ajewole was shot in the head upon arriving at his home gate in the Moniya area of Ibadan around 8:30 pm on Monday, June 5, 2023.
The assailants then allegedly took his body away and later discarded it at an unidentified location. It has since been recovered and transported to the University of Ibadan’s Anatomy Department.
His car was also reportedly taken by the perpetrators, further complicating the investigation into the motive behind this gruesome act.
Born on March 6, 1962, Professor Ajewole was a respected figure at the University of Ibadan, contributing to the Department of Forest Resources Management as a lecturer.
His sudden and violent death has sent shockwaves through the academic community.
Joke Akinpelu, the Principal Assistant Registrar for Public Communications at the University of Ibadan, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday.
However, due to the early stages of the investigation, she was unable to provide further details.
Akinpelu stated, “Yes, it is true. But we are not sure if it is armed robbers or hired assassins. He was killed yesterday (Monday). The incident happened yesterday”.
As the university grapples with the tragic loss of Professor Ajewole, the search for his killers is expected to intensify.
The university community and law enforcement agencies are hopeful that the circumstances surrounding the professor’s death will be fully uncovered, and justice will be served.
