Nigeria’s former President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, on Friday, April 3, 2015 sent a message, congratulatinng General Muhammadu Buhari on his recent victory at the presidential election and hailing President Jonathan for threading the noble path and etching his name in the sands of time.
Shagari’s message, which was made available to newsmen in Sokoto, read in parts: ”Let me join my compatriots, former Nigerian leaders, millions of Nigerians at home and in diaspora, world leaders and the international community in congratulating the President-elect.
”As a patriot, I trust that you will put your vast experience and knowledge of the country , its people and the connections you established with other countries of Africa and the world during your almost two years of leadership of the country to bear in the running of a united and all-inclusive government that will revitalise all sectors of Nigerian life,”
Shagari went on to congratulate Nigerians for their peaceful conduct of the election.
He also commended President Jonathan for his courage, maturity and patriotism in reaching out to General Buhari even when the results for the polls had not yet been announced.
He said: “This singular act has provided Jonathan a special place in the annals of Nigerian history as a true statesman and democrat as well as earned him my respect and that of the people not only in Nigeria but the world over.”
