LAGOS, Nigeria — A tragic incident occurred in the Iganmu area of Lagos on Monday, May 29, 2023, as a 13-year-old boy, Ekene, was reportedly stabbed to death over a dispute concerning the ownership of rubber slippers.
The boy was immediately rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital for emergency medical attention, but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
His remains were later moved to Yaba General Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
Lagos State Police Command has apprehended two suspects, Ahmed, 28, and Umaru Abubakar, 18, in connection with the fatal stabbing.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrests. He said that the incident took place around 6 pm at Iganmu under the Bridge.
According to Hundeyin, a tip-off from a concerned citizen alerted the Ijora Badia Police Division about a brewing conflict in the Iganmu area, which led to the discovery of the critically injured teenager.
The PPRO explained, “Information at the scene indicated that the victim was allegedly stabbed by two boys over a minor issue concerning ownership of rubber slippers.” He added that the suspects fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Upon being taken to the station for interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime. The victim’s mother, Mrs Chizoba Agu, identified the deceased as her son at the hospital.
Hundeyin further stated that the suspects would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for a thorough investigation.
The gruesome incident has sparked outrage in the community, highlighting the need for effective conflict resolution measures among youths in the area.
