Senate Queries FCT-IRS Chairman Over Plan To Pay FIRS N1 Billion

Must read

Senate on Thursday, April 1, 2021, queried the proposed payment of N1 billion to the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, by the management of the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS).

Abdullahi Attah, the executive chairman of the FCT-IRS, had told the Senate Committee on FCT during the defence of the agency’s N8.5 billion 2021 budget proposal the N1 billion proposed remittance to FIRS is a commission from the N100 billion the agency targets to generate this year.

The agency had earlier appeared before the Senate Committee on FCT, chaired by Senator Abubakar Kyari (Borno North), on Tuesday, for budget defence but was told to return on Thursday over alleged discrepancies in budgetary proposals it submitted.

Kyari asked Attah to explain the N1billion planned remittance to the FIRS from its projected revenue in 2021.

The FCT-IRS Chairman said the planned remittance, which is being done on yearly basis, is for payment of salaries of 117 FIRS staff who are collaborating with the agency for aggressive revenue collection.

Angered by the submission, the Committee Chairman wondered why the agency, established about four years ago, has not recruited enough staff to handle its revenue collections.
